Datawind Launches Pocket Surfer 2G4, 3G4 & 3G5 Android Smartphones

The brains behind the famous Aakash tablet, Datawind have announced three new dirt cheap Pocket Surfer Android smartphones. The Pocket Surfer 2G4, 3G4 and 3G5 smartphones cost Rs. 1999, Rs. 2999 and Rs. 5999 respectively. Datawind #-Link-Snipped-# with Reliance Communications to equip the smartphones with free internet for a whole year. Before you get all worked up, we have to inform you that the free internet usage of 12 months, 2G or 3G is only valid if you browse internet through the pre-installed Ubisurfer Browser. Any audio and video streaming is chargeable and since Android phones are notorious for their background data usage, they won’t be counted as free. Moving on, let’s check out the smartphones one by one.

From the Rs. 1999 price tag you might have already made up your prejudices that the Pocket Surfer 2G4 skimps on the conventional smartphone luxuries, and you are right. The Pocket Surfer 2G4 runs a dated Android 4.0.3 Ice Cream Sandwich on a single-core 1 GHz Cortex A7 processor and 256 MB of RAM. The Pocket Surfer 2G4 sports a 3.5 inch qHD (960x480) resolution display and has an internal memory of 512MB. Since you will run out of space the moment you buy the phone, Datawind has generously included a 32GB microSD card slot. As the name suggests Datawind Pocket Surfer 2G4 offers 2G connectivity and Dual-SIM. Other connectivity features include Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and microUSB. On the camera front, you only have a single rear VGA sensor with no flash. On the official product page, the company does not say the battery capacity but says that it will offer 3 hours of talk time and 2 days of standby which is pretty poor.

If you are willing to spend a grand more, you get the Pocket Surfer 3G4 which is a dual-SIM, Android 4.4.2 KitKat smartphone with 3G connectivity. Underneath the 4inch qHD resolution display, we find the same single-core 1 GHz Cortex A7 processor and 256 MB of RAM. Internal memory and external memory stats remain the same. The photography department gets better with a 5MP rear camera with flash and a front VGA sensor. Connectivity options remain the same but you do get a gyro sensor, something that is missing from its predecessor. This time too, the company does not mention battery size but quotes the same stats as the previous one.

The last of the trio, the Pocket Surfer 3G5 costs you Rs.5999 and the cost is entirely for a bigger screen. On the Pocket Surfer 3G5, you get 5inch WVGA resolution display on which you can interact with Android KitKat 4.4.2 that runs on a single-core 1 GHz Cortex A7 processor and 512 MB of RAM. The internal memory is relatively large 4GB and you get the obvious microSD card slot. The Pocket Surfer 3G5 sports a 2MP front camera with flash and a VGA sensor on the front. As usual the company has quoted the same battery statistics.

To be brutally honest, none of these smartphones look good on paper but when you consider the price it’s a whole different ball game. So will these smartphones make a mark in the market, only time will tell.
