DARPA And IBM Collaborate To Develop Self-Destructing Electronics

DARPA or Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the research agency of United States' defense department is looking to develop electronics that would self-destruct. US already has control of what may be called as 'one of the most advanced' military technologies in the world. And the reports floating around suggest that researchers are working on taking it far ahead of rest of the world. The project was kicked off under the master idea of Vanishing Programmable Resources (VAPR). According to the latest reports, IBM has been roped in by US government to develop these transient devices. The company would be looking to use the property of strained glass substrates to break the CMOS chip into silicon and silicon dioxide powder.

self-destructing

The thinking behind VAPR suggested that there is always a possibility of any technology falling in the hands of enemy and then being hacked in-to to retrieve the crucial information. This negation of technological advantage over rivals in a battlefield makes it imperative to have devices which would be self-destroyed before being intercepted into. The VAPR program manager, Alicia Jackson of DARPA hinted that the agency is keen on developing devices that would last only 'as long as they are needed' and could be destroyed by a signal sent from a far place. Also the efficiency of the transient device as compared to that of commercial-off-the-shelf electronics is an issues that should be tackled against its programmable persistence.

The project is presumably in very early stages where the researchers are trying to figure out the methodologies to develop the technology. However, there is certainly a world of possibilities when it comes to the kind of devices that could be developed based on this technology. While DARPA and IBM work on providing edge to the US military, this idea has definitely provided the current crop of innovators (and probably the to-be-innovators too) with lots of food-for-thought.
