Convert Regular Photos To 3D Models Faster Than Ever Before

Converting digital photos to 3D models isn't a particularly new thing, but the technology developed by researchers from Tokyo Institute of Technology has made the process a lot faster. The new system quickly creates 3D spacial data from regular photos. For doing this, the camera is fitted with an Eye-Fi card that wirelessly sends the photos to a PC, where a 3D model gets created instantly. So, if you are not satisfied with the 3D measurements of the model, you can just take some more photos and the system updates the model.

These researchers have developed a system called SfM or Structure from Motion that will estimate the 3D shape and camera position from several pictures of the same scene. Then it continuously reproduces spatial position data while matching characteristic points between two pictures.

Though the project is still in its initial stages, the team has been able to achieve an efficient 3D restoration method that detects unsuitable pictures and does overall optimization in line with the cumulative error. Take a look at the video from #-Link-Snipped-# here -
