channel and bandwidth relation

hello,

Could anyone explain the properties that a channel must essentially posses for it to provide a wider bandwidth and how is the speed supported by a channel dependent upon the bandwidth considerations?

    channel capacity=wlog(1+s/n)
    w=bandwidth
    s/n=signal to noise ratio

    but what is the term responsible for governing the speed of data transfer? is is the channel capacity or some other parameter?
