CES 2015: Storedot Charger Can Charge A Battery in < 2 Minutes

It seems that nothing is impossible at CES 2015. After the #-Link-Snipped-# and world’s thinnest tablet at 6mm it seemed that there are no more extraordinary surprises left to be unveiled. But nanotech company StoreDot has proved that the best was yet to come. At CES 2015, StoreDot showed a charger that could recharge the battery to its full capacity in less than two minutes. It may seem something out of a trendy science fiction movie, but it is for real. StoreDot has shown that charging a phone in time lesser than what it will take you to read this article will be possible in the near future.

StoreDot had demonstrated a StoreDot's Charger Replenishes Battery In Half A Minute few months ago. However, the difference between then and now is that then the battery was very thick. So much so, that the battery was thicker than the handset itself thus making the technology unrealistic. This time however, in the demonstration it was a regular Samsung phone which was charged from almost no battery to 100% battery. It is worth mentioning that StoreDot said that currently the battery would only last five hours with single charge. But considering the few minutes of charging time, it seems like a fair trade-off.

StoreDot said that in order to make the battery, they used specially synthesised organic molecules which have greater electric capacitance than current batteries and measure a mere 2 nanometres across. The company’s chief executive Doron Myersdorf said that the because of these materials they could achieve the unconventionally fast movement of ions from anode to cathode. This is what allowed the battery to be charged in minutes instead of hours that it takes to charge the current lithium-ion batteries.

However, this tech will take some time reach the current phones. The battery in the current phones won’t be able to withstand the 40 amps of electricity the charger supplies. StoreDot has set a goal of 2017 where they hope to match the energy density of its own batteries as well as lithium-ion ones. Mr Myersdorf confirmed that StoreDot has had many meetings with some major players to buy the license or exclusive rights of the technology. Additionally, StoreDot is also expecting that by the time of release of the battery for consumers in 2017, they will be able to reduce the charging time by half.
