Canon EOS-1D X Mark II To Compete Nikon D5 - Features 4K Video, 20.2MP, 14fps And More

Canon has announced EOS-1D X Mark II as the successor of its 2012 EOS 1D X. It is also perceived as a retaliation to Nikon’s D5 at the CES earlier this year, which sported some stunning specs. The Mark II is equipped with a 20.2-megapixel full-frame sensor and a revamped 61 auto-focus points that include 41 cross-type points and all new Digic 6+ image processors that are capable of faster and better image processing.

Canon has retained the exterior design from the original 1D X, but made a lot of changes on the inside. This camera is also aimed at a very specific audience; action photographers like sports and wildlife. That is the reason why Canon has put a lot of effort into making this camera really fast. It can shoot up to 14 frames per second, and about 170 raw files before the camera starts to slow down. Relatively, that is fast enough to capture the entire 100 meter sprint of an athlete from start to finish. The analogy also explains that Canon is hopeful that this camera will capture stunning moments at this year’s Olympics in Brazil. The camera provides good weather proofing for shooting under harsh conditions, and a better battery with extended life.

To handle heating up of the insides at such high frame rates and burst mode shooting, the camera comes with a built-in exhaust system too. The new Digic image processors and the sensors are equally fast in processing the frames captured, and Canon has thought it all the way through to the memory card. The Canon 1D X Mark II supports CFast cards. A lot of the processing is done on the sensors, providing images more precise than ever before.

In addition to all the innovations, the ISO range too has seen significant increase, though it doesn’t come close to Nikon’s D5. But Canon has settled for a personal best with a natural ISO range of 100 - 51,200, and extended ISO range of 50 - 409600. The Mark II also comes with a GPS, headphone and microphone jacks. The optical viewfinder is fixed, with 100% coverage.

Still shooting is not the only area the Mark II specialises in. It is also armed with 4K video capabilities at 60fps and 1080p Full HD videos at 120fps. With the Frame Grab feature, you can also snap an 8.8 megapixel still image from a 4K video during playback. The features all look really cool, but the Canon 1D X Mark II is a bit pricey, at $5999 for the body alone. As to how it compares against Nikon D5 Steals The Thunder At CES - Raises Bar For Canon And Olympus, we will have to wait till professional photographers get their hands on them.
