Blackphone Announces The World’s First Privacy-Focused App Store & PrivatOS Version 1.1

Blackphone, one of the first companies to launch privacy focused smartphones for the public has announced that it will be launching the world’s first privacy focused app store and an update to its heavily modded Android KitKat based operating system, PrivatOS. The Blackphone app store will be launched in the month of January 2015 for all Blackphone users and it shall be stocked with privacy-focused applications handpicked by the Blackphone team. PrivateOS 1.1 will make a debut sometime in early 2015 and will have the Blackphone app store preloaded on it. The company’s CEO has described the launch of the app store a "game changer" for the brand.

The PrivatOS 1.1 will have a new feature known as Spaces. In regular smartphones it is difficult to separate spaces for personal and professional data. For example your official apps stay in the same place as social networking and games apps. Blackphone says that to guarantee privacy and segregation between information shared between apps you had to carry two smartphones but with the introduction of Spaces all your apps, data and accounts shall be kept sandboxed in separate places. The user will be given the freedom to separate work apps from fun apps and kid-friendly apps from parents-only apps on the Blackphone. Engadget points out that the Spaces feature is quite similar to Samsung’s Knox security solution whose latest version came bundled with the Samsung Galaxy S5. A ‘Silent Space’ will be preloaded by default that stores the Silent Suite of apps for encrypted communication.
