BlackBerry Leap: An All-touch Smartphone For 4G LTE Network

Today, BlackBerry has announced the launch of its new smartphone called 'BlackBerry Leap' for 4G LTE network at the company's Mobile World Congress 2015 press conference. According to BlackBerry, Leap is a professional tool for executives and businessmen and will be available in the U.S and European markets in April. BlackBerry Leap has a 5 inch HD display that renders screen resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels. It has pixel density of 294 ppi and aspect ratio of 16:9. Powered by very same Qualcomm MSM 8960 1.5 GHz processor, the phone has 2 GB RAM and internal storage of 16 GB like BlackBerry Classic. Similarly, the external memory can be expanded up to 128 GB via microSD memory card. Running on BlackBerry 10.3.1 OS, the Leap weighs 170 g (6.0 oz). The framework of the handset has the dimensions of 144 × 72.8 × 9.5 mm. It will also support Android apps.

The 8 MP auto-focus rear camera with flash support and 5x digital zoom can record 1080p HD video at 30 fps. The camera also features 2DOF video stabilization. The 2 MP front-facing fixed-focus camera sports 3x digital zoom and provides 720p HD video recording. Both the cameras (front and rear) have features similar to Classic. According to BlackBerry, Leap packs 2800 mAH (minimum) non-removable Lithium Ion battery that has battery life up to 25 hours.

The connectivity includes 802.11 b/g/n 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi, 4G Mobile Hotspot, HSPA, Bluetooth 4.0 Low Energy (LE) and EDR, and GPS. Sensors like Accelerometer, Proximity and Ambient light are also provided. BlackBerry Leap has dedicated keys for Volume Up/Down, Mute, Lock (for Power On/Off) and its on screen BlackBerry Keyboard (portrait/landscape) features contextual auto-correction, next-word prediction and a personalized learning engine that helps it to know about the way users type.

The BlackBerry Leap includes pre-loaded apps such as BlackBerry Hub, BlackBerry Blend, BlackBerry Link, BlackBerry Assistant, Contacts, Clock, Calculator, File Manager, Text Messaging, Remember (memos/tasks combo), Evernote, Password Keeper and many more. In addition to the list, BlackBerry Magnify, Face-to-face video chat with BBM Video, Teletypewriter (TTY) Support are also provided for easy accessibility.


After looking at the features and specifications, the new Leap is similar to Classic mainly in terms of storage, processor and camera.
