Retina Implant, a German medical technology company, has developed an artificial retina which is a wirelessly controlled microchip. A company funded trial was carried out, where the participants were implanted with the microchip in one eye. The participants were blinded by an inherited disease, retinitis pigmentosa, where the eye's light detecting rod and cone cells, called photoreceptors, degenerate over time and diminish eventually.

The implant was successful among the participants, where some could detect moving patterns on a screen and others could see everyday objects. Some were able to read letters while some were able to see their own hands and the faces of their loved ones. Each of them went through different experiences, since theses results are influenced by many factors that vary individually. The company is pretty positive with the results of the trials and are still testing the device in Germany, UK and China and also is recruiting patients to be tested upon.
