Audi And Renovo For Wooden Bicycles

‘AUDI’ and ‘Bicycles’ sounds strange but it is true. The automobile giant is now making bicycles (also) in collaboration with RENOVO. Some of you may know that RENOVO is famous for its hardwood bicycles. RENOVO combines technology and craftsmanship to create bicycles from hollow wood and laminated bamboo. And now AUDI is teaming up with RENOVO to come up with their ‘duo’ - series of bikes that feature monocoque frames made of hardwood.

Monocoque is structural design approach where primary loads are carried by the skin or outer shell of a structure, rather than an internal framework.

History says that in early 1700s, when lightweight metals were not available, the first bicycles were made almost completely of wood. At that time it was easily available and cheap also. But now in the world of metals, it is quite hard to believe that wood is more durable than the metals which we use in our bicycles. We use aluminium, carbon fiber these days even in automobiles because of their lightweight property. But a bicycle’s wooden frame weighs from 3.5 to 4.5 pounds and complete bicycle weighs 16.5 to 20 pounds.

Following features show how wooden bicycles are efficient than metal ones:

[*]Wood absorbs vibrations better than steel, aluminum or carbon, producing a uniquely smooth ride.
[*]The fatigue life of wood exceeds steel or aluminum, and approaches carbon.
[*]Wood is not susceptible to crack propagation from dents like that in metals.
[*]And the most important, wood is sustainable, recyclable, biodegradable, and has a tiny carbon footprint, while the primary production of steel, aluminum, titanium and carbon fiber are incredibly polluting and unfriendly to our environment.

The carbon fiber and aluminiun are not left out of the vehicle altogether. They are used in bicycles components.

The upcoming models of bicycles from AUDI are:
  • Duo City: It is designed for casual riders with comfortable and short distance commuting. It features a grease-free Gates Center Track belt drive instead of the traditional chain drive. Bicycle has 8-speed internal hub gear.#-Link-Snipped-#
  • Duo Sport: it is designed for fitness and long distance commuting. It also features grease-free Gates Center Track belt drive with 11-speed internal hub gear.
  • Duo Road: It is designed as a performance bike featuring narrow tires, no fenders and minimal accessories.  For superiority it is having a compact 20-speed gear train.
Besides these each of the bicycles will be having the trademark logo of 4 rings on the frame.
