ASUS Zenfone Series Smartphones To Be Launched In China On April 11

Hardware major Asus had earlier announced a new smartphone range called ZenFone at the CES 2014. The technical details and the launch date were only being rumored until now. The company has now stepped up and cleared the air via a post on its Sina Weibo (China's Twitter) account. The ZenFone 4, ZenFone 5 and ZenFone 6 smartphones will be launched in China on April 11. For now, the global availability of these phones has not yet been declared. All three smartphones will be able to support upto 2 SIMs and will run on Android 4.3 but thankfully, the company has promised to update the OS to Android 4.4 KitKat.

The Asus ZenFone 4 will contain a 4-inch WVGA (800 x 480 pixel) resolution display. The phone will contain 1 GB RAM and an internal memory of 4 GB expandable upto 64 GB using a microSD card. The phone also has a 5 MP rear camera and a 0.3 MP front camera. All these will be powered by a dual-core 1.2GHz Intel Atom Z2520 processor with Quad-Thread Hyper-Threading Technology. The phone is priced at a decent low price of roughly $100 (or Rs. 6,100). The phone has a battery of capacity 1170mAh and has the dimensions of 124.4x61.4x11.2-6.3mm. Possibly aimed at the first-time smartphone users, especially teenagers, the phone will be available in 5 colors- red, white, black, blue and yellow.

Asus ZenFone 5, a level up from the ZenFone 4, is powered using a 2 GHz dual-core 2GHz Intel Atom Z2580 with Quad-Thread Hyper-Threading technology. It has a RAM of 1 GB and an internal memory of 8 GB, expandable upto 64 GB. ZenFone 5 has the rear and front cameras of 8 MP and 2 MP respectively. The 5 inch IPS technology screen displays a resolution of upto 720p. It packs a battery of capacity 2050mAh and is available in 4 colours- black, white, red and gold. The phone measures 148.2 x 72.8 x 10.3-5.5mm in size. The price of this phone will be about $50 more than the ZenFone 4 which means that one has to shell out about Rs. 9,100 for a ZenFone 5.

Now the ZenFone 6 is no different than the ZenFone 5 but has a screen size of 6 inches. The phone also sports a 13 MP rear and a 2 MP front camera. It also has a greater battery capacity of 3230 mAh and is the largest among the three measuring 166.9 x 84.3 x 9.9-5.5mm. It is priced at about $200 or Rs. 12,150.

Asus surely appears to be targeting the growing smartphone markets in developing countries. If launched in India, the ZenFone range will be a definite competitor for local as well as global handset companies.

Not any major international brands for sure... Mostly the Micromax Canvas A96, Xolo A500s, the iBall Andi range and especially the Intex Aqua Wonder Quadcore

@ Ankita - How many can I name? Along with the ones that Chaitanya has already mentioned, you got the MMX Canvas 4, 3, HD, Turbo, Knight, Juice, Music, Fun, Doodle, Karbonn Titanium S5, S9, A600, A510s, Lava Iris xxx, Xolo A500/600/700/800/900/910/1000/1100, Play, Intex Aqua xx, along with a whole host of devices from Lenovo, Panasonic, Gionee, Huawei, ZTE, Videocon, Spice, MAXX, Alcatel and assorted all sorts. Basically all the glorious gadget spam that we've been subjected to by the fly-by-night Indo-Chinese brands and joined in by Samsung, LG and even Sony! 😏

The only phone that need not lose sleep over the ZF range for the most part is the MotoG IMO. πŸ˜€

@ Chaitanya - Of course this will be a major competition to the MNCs as well!! 😨

The massively overpriced "budget" devices from the global OEMs that reek of cheapness and lack of sophistication like Nokia X, along with the upcoming X+ and XL, the Samsung Galaxy Star/Pro/Trend/Duos2/Fame/Core, LG Optimus L3 II, L4 II, L5 II, L7 II, the upcoming L90, L70, L65, L40, L35, and Sony Xperia L, E/EII, M/MII should be wiped out of existence after the release of this range from Asus. 😑

The ZF6 will specifically compete with "budget" phablets like Grand 2/Neo, G Pro Lite, T2 Ultra etc. especially because those are so much more expensive without providing anything substantially more compelling.

If Asus can bring the upcoming Zenfones at the stated pricepoints (6K, 9K, 12K), we will probably see a shakeup in the smartphone pricing strategies of various OEMs going forward, seeing as for the first time it will bring decent specs with quality hardware from an aggressive tier 1 vendor at reasonable prices. 😁

Everything else that Samsung/LG/Sony and the Desi brands are churning out right now are just wrong on so many different levels.
