2.5 GHz processor for Mobile!? Its Qualcomm’s Snapdragon!

Qualcomm, an American wireless telecommunications research and Development Company, as well as the largest fab-less (company that designs and sells the hardware but outsources the fabrication) chip supplier in the world is set to rock the mobile industry with its new Snapdragon mobile processor. It revealed the processor at the Mobile World Congress (14th-17th Feb) at Barcelona.

Built with a speed of up to 2.5 gigahertz, this new version of the processor is 12 times faster than any of its forerunners. Qualcomm designs various processor chips and sells them to mobile companies like LG, Motorola, Sharp, Sanyo, Samsung etc.

Nicknamed “Krait”,  Snapdragon will redefine performance for the industry, offering speeds of up to 2.5GHz per core and delivering 150 percent higher overall performance, as well as 65 percent lower power than currently available ARM-based CPU cores. Qualcomm said the APQ8064 chip will integrate a quad-combo of connectivity solutions - WiFi, GPS, Bluetooth and FM. The samples of this processor are expected to be out by 2012.

Besides supporting near field communications, the APQ8064 chipset also allows stereoscopic 3D video and photo capture/playback in one-button-press. According to Qualcomm, this processor will also include the Adreno 320 quad-core GPU (graphics processing units) which is said to be 15 times better than their previous Adreno chip. The processor supports 20 megapixel camera and it will internally synchronize two camera sensors for 3D video recording and will support external 3D video playback.

"With its WiFi integration and ability to seamlessly interface with Qualcomm’s 3G and LTE modules, the APQ8064 will provide OEM’s with a flexible, cost efficient and fast time to market platform that can meet all of their design configuration needs for tablets and next generation computing and consumer electronic devices", said Luis Pineda, senior vice president of computing and consumer products at Qualcomm.

With awesome graphics and speed, higher screen resolution, High Definition gaming, multi-tasking and multi channel audio, this processor is surely going to make your mobile experience very alluring!
