1 Gbps Ultra High Speed Broadband In India In 2013

Radius Infratel CEO Rajnish Wahi has an amazing news for the Indian Broadband Internet users - the company promises ultra high speed broadband in India in 2013. Mr. Wahi has said that in the next 6-9 months, Indian residential Internet consumers will have access to the world class 1000 Mbps (1Gbps) connection speeds. What that means is you will be able to download a 2.5 hour, full HD movie in just 30 seconds. We're writing this piece as we slowly move into the 15th day to get our new FTTH connection activated and there's no sign of 'movement' from the concerned officials. But the die-hard Internet enthusiast inside us is quite optimistic and excited about the 1 Gbps connections.



Wahi said that the service will be made available to the consumers in 9 cities but did not disclose the names or the partners and associates through which the service will be rolled out. Gurgaon will surely be on the list because Wahi confirmed that the cable laying and network deployment is already complete in the region and the company is in talks with the partners involved. Radius has associated with leading names like DLF, Unitech, Emaar MGF, Ansal, Mantri, Vipul, ATS, Omaxe, Vipul, M3M, Paramount and Prateek for the optic fiber network services to be provided in the upcoming projects by these big brands. It's estimated that the Radius Infratel network will be soon made available in Bengaluru, Chennai, Pune, Mumbai and Chandigarh.

Those who've been following the news in technology space are already aware that Google took the world by storm when it announced to deploy 1 Gbps Internet in the city of Kansas, USA. We always thought we won't see those broadband speeds in India before 2020 because most of the Indian telecom services providers are still getting the 3G and even the broadband thing right. Currently, Airtel is the clear leader in the country by being the first telecom company to launch 4G wireless network in Kolkata and Bangalore and we expect other telecos to join the party in 2013. However, by all means, 1 Gbps networks would disrupt the Indian markets.

India has struggled with the Internet speeds for a long time now. A recently published report by Akamai Inc. put India at #112 (and China at #95) on the basis of average Internet connection speeds. The average Internet connection speed in India is estimated to be about 1 Mbps. We expect the fiber networks to improve the things for Indians and bring the cost of owning a high-speed internet connection down. It's no wonder that price is going to be crucial factor in improving the penetration of broadband in India.
