Non-Pneumatic Tyres At Tokyo Motor Show

One of world's largest and oldest tyre manufacturing company Bridgestone announced their new airless tyre concept at the 42nd Tokyo Motor Show 2011. This tyre is somewhat similar to the same concept that was announced by Michelin about six or seven years ago but came nowhere near to reality. But Bridgestone has taken this up with some tweaks and is now revealing their new line up of tyres at the show.

This tyre uses thermoplastic resin to support the entire weight of vehicles and it does not use air as conventional tyres do. The interconnection of the thermoplastic spokes are made tangentially from the centre of the tyre which curve and bend just before touching with the rims, which is important to curb torque to stop structural breakdown.

The concept of Bridgestone and Michelin differ in the way that Michelin's concept allowed the tyres to deform over any obstacles which was more intended towards military uses rather than commercial uses by regular cars. While Bridgestone took this concept and created tyres that is recyclable and will be low on maintenance cost. The outer layer of the tyre is standard rubber and the recyclable parts are the inner thermoplastic resin. There has been no official release date nor price details revealed by the company but they said the initial testing of these tyres on electric vehicles have been successful and the ride was comforting with negligible amount of noise.
