A hot topic lately is Google "Android" Cell Phone software and getting cell phones which use this operating system to talk to an external microcontroller via Bluetooth or some other means and in turn for the microcontroller to control something. Maybe turn on/off the lights in your house. Maybe start your car. Maybe show a live remote camera image of the baby in its room. Etc.

All the development software for Android is open source, and the Android SDK comes with a cell phone emulator, however the emulator does not support Bluetooth and does not seem to emulate any hardware. (Thus this could be an expensive project if you have to buy a $300 (U.S. currency) cell phone and a $50 Bluetooth module. Microcontrollers are not too expensive though.)
