Turn The Screws!

Open your eyes, look in front, look at the back, look at any angle and you will see something that is an engineer's creation.

Engineers have been making things possible that others could only imagine. It perfectly makes sense to have a common place for engineers from around the world where they can share ideas, innovate, & help each other. Engineers are eternal, with the younger at 62 & the youngest at 17, the CEan gang consists of working professionals, students, entrepreneurs, CEOs, professors, geeks & nerds.

Default Search Engine War : MS Vs. Google Vs. Yahoo!

Any takers?

Back in 1994-95, Yahoo, Lycos & Infoseek dominated the search market. Well, old folks are still making rounds while the new players (Google) emerged! On December 23, 2002 Yahoo announced that it would buy Inktomy ($235 million) marking the start of search engine war.

Yahoo denies it, but the biggest threat today to it comes from Google. I've also heard about Microsoft combining seach capabilities with its new OS. Microsoft openly admits that Google is their rival #1 in internet search market. Well, they did come up with MSN Beta Search last year, but it failed to gain popularity.

Well, my vote is for google

What about you?

Is this discussion kinda biased towards Google

Well, I'll be neutral :?

Its true that world's gateway to internet is through Google.com , let's take a look at numbers -Google fields 48.1 percent of the searches online, followed by Yahoo at 31.8 percent and MSN at 16 percent, according to ComScore QSearch. Google no doubt has the biggest index of pages followed by Yahoo & MSN.

It must be noted that Yahoo search does a better job when it comes to indexing Blogs than rivals Google & MSN search... (Well mine does not show up on Yahoo & Google ). Let us not exclude AdCenter- Microsoft's answer to Google Adwords. Microsoft, they say, has generated (and is tracking) lots of user specific data through Hotmail, MSN and other services. It maintains it under GUID (Global UserID). AdCenter will user this data to provide superior quality search results. But yes, you have to pay for this service.

Search engines may continue to fight, but we, the end users, are the winners! What say?

Hi there! Welcome to the CE forums

No doubt that google did a great job with keyhole. Google is still #1 in search engines and their search index is way better than MSN or Yahoo.

But wait! Big daddy isn't sleeping. Infact, MS is heavy on improving its search engine and they are determined to develop a search engine that (thay say) will put google to shame. Even on our CrazyEngineers website, the MSN bot spends more time than Yahoo Slurp Spider or Googlebot.

Have a look at this -

"Google has no clue about what enterprises want or need. Any success they have (with Google Spreadsheets) will come in the consumer market first and then be dragged into the enterprise that way," said Gartner analyst David Smith. "The real power-users are not going to be giving up their Excel spreadsheets anytime soon."

Btw, here's the link to Writely -> www.writely.com

Thanks ! Its the CEans who are doing a great job. Please introduce yourself in 'Introduce Yourself' section

Uncle Bill has money and he's using it in next version of Windows. Google is no doubt giving MS sleepless nights. The war is on and the end users are winning. Isn't that good?

I have registered for google's spreadhsheets program but yet to receive an invite from them . Google beats MSN in two major areas - Online Search & Online Advertising.

Microsoft has the money power and their flagship products to their side. OS market is totally dominated by microsoft and it is really impossible for any other company to forey into OS market and beat the mighty Windows. What happened to Linux? They are giving it out for free. But still, it doesn't come close to Windows.

As biggie said, consumers will be the winners! So Chill !

Rick
